The Aesthetics of Success

In her blog Swimming Upstream, Kathalijne van Zutphen discusses life, art, and the principles of success with various Cape Town Creatives.  Her journey started randomly, birthed from collective conscience, while discussing like minded topics over drinks at a party.  Seeing that she was determined to make a name for herself as a photographer, she could just as easily relate to the whole experience.  Now, I find myself in good company… (although I cannot hold any dibs on the title of photographer).

If one had to define success would they attribute it to talent, creativity or good old-fashioned hard work? Personally, being a Capricorn, I know that I am drawn to working hard and pushing the limits. Then it becomes a question of coupling it up with natural talent, creativity, or brains. I’ll settle on creativity, thank you very much.

” A hunch is creativity trying to tell you something.” Frank Capra (film director)

When most people attribute the term ‘creative’ it’s normally as a result of aesthetics. Creativity is so much more than a painting on the wall. Instead of being labeled as a product, it’s also a way of life. Playful risk takers, such as they are, cannot be boxed by the clothes they wear, but rather in their choices, thoughts, and actions.

The journey to success, filled with detours, speed bumps, temperamental weather and gorgeous landscapes,  is a journey that a lot of people start, on but very few people finish.  This image below sums up perfectly just what it takes to get just about anywhere.

“The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover is yourself.” — Alan Alda

Enter the Swimming upstream Candidates. Just a handful of talent, making their way through the landscaped streets of  Cape Town. These are the kinds of people who are well aware of the challenges and know how to spot a wolf in sheep’s clothing. They are dead set on their own ambition (whatever that ambition may be) and won’t get a good nights sleep till they get there.

Maybe, you’re one of them too. If so, lets mingle at the big-bang launch party taking place on the 11th November 2010. A room full of creatives  sounds like pure candy-cotten bliss. Afterall, as the great Albert Einstein once said :

“Creativity is contagious. Pass it on.”
