The Big Blue World Presents

girl in a gildedIn true, Rock never dies fashion, explodes this track from a much bigger album called Big Blue World.

What drew me in? This single cover and the notion of that girl we all know being caged to her gilded cage. In an out of place, belonging no-where and finding herself everywhere with guitar riffs to dress your Friday by, and enough attitude to leave you feeling like the better person – this track packs a pretty powerful punch. And it kicks up pretty in a punk-ass-rock-chic kinda way.

Based in London, Neil Fitzsimon and Bee Brogan aim to produce “pure pop for now people.” Neil and Bee were both members of the band, Pretty Blue Gun, who were signed to an indie label, licensed to Sony.  They released two albums which were critically acclaimed. Some of the guest musicians included members of The Art of Noise, Dave Bronze (Eric Clapton’s bass player), Tobias Boshell (Moody Blues) and Pip Williams, who played the guitar on the Walker Brothers’ track, ‘No Regrets’.  The albums were produced by Pat Collier, who produced Katrina and the Waves’ international hit, ‘Walking on Sunshine’.  The band went on national tours across the UK, until disbanding.

In an album that makes distinct musical choices – it’s clear why some things were meant to say together. Such as this duo. They are so much more than punk rock emotions – and their track Blue Velvet shows why their scope can stand the test of time. With fascinating, timely cords, that sound like they were gifted from Africa, coupled with simple lyrics and soothing vocals – you realize this album is too deep to be placed into its own gilded cage.

BBW single artworkAs for the title track: the irrevocable twang, cords that shake up the dust, and music that’s wedged between what you think it ought to be – this track is utterly catchable, danceable, and infectious in its own full birthright. These guys know how to take space, earn it, claim it, and hold it. Without the self-entitlement or bravado that comes with it. With some years to find themselves, and an air of full-embodied authenticity – this is clearly why they do the things they do.
